PLAYING IN LIFE'S ORCHESTRA
Playing in Life's Orchestra
Dr. Mary Rodio

For better or worse, you must play your own little instrument in life, says Dale Carnegie, a man famous for giving great advice. The trick to living, however, is to learn to play our "instruments" to the best of our abilities. Living life well is an art similar to playing in an orchestra -- it requires imagination, concentration, and enthusiasm.

Life is a flow that we can either go with or fight against. The more that we harmonize with the rhythms of life, the easier it is for us to feel enriched from living.

Live Close to Your Spirit
If people have one ability in life that is important to develop, it is the ability to live close to their spirits. Living from the spirit adds excitement and courage to life's daily drama. Some people complain of boredom. Perhaps they've done too many things.

Apparently, those people have little to look forward to. Some of them travel the world seeking to know themselves, but this they can find without stepping a foot outside thier doors.

During my travels, I often see tourists blaze their way from one historic site to another. They snap a picture, buy a trinket, and leave feeling they've experienced nearly everything that place has to offer. Yet have they?

Life isn't boring. What is boring is our limited appreciation of the moment. The deeper our concentration, the deeper our feelings and appreciation. An artist may lock onto a moment and express the experience of it so creatively that we who view the work also glimpse the experience.

Absorb Yourself Into the Present Moment
A true experience involves merging ourselves into the present moment. To have other than a superficial experience, we must develop the ability to see with a fresh view, hear with focused concentration, and be aware of the smells and feelings of the moment.

Life is not a tour bus that dumps us off at a particular stop on its route. We needn't scurry about picking up little souvenirs to show the folks back home.

Shouldn't an experience mean more to us than a snapshot clicked-off on the run? A fully experienced moment is more precious than a snapshot. A fully experienced moment imprints upon the brain -- indelibly etched upon the spirit -- its sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and textures are with us always.

Savor the moment. When you speak with someone, give them the courtesy of your full concentration. Not only will you understand that person better, he or she will feel good about speaking with someone who cares enough to listen. Also, seek others who share your views on life and you'll undoubtedly inspire each other and draw closer in spirit.

Subtle Level of Awareness
Our life is both art and music when we live close to our spirits. We can direct most of our actions, speech, and thoughts toward higher, subtler levels of awareness than what we may think. To do this, we must be willing to journey within ourselves.

The journey begins in darkness, because our preoccupation with the world obscures the Light. However, as we move forward, we begin to see and feel the Light's presence within us. Unless we leave our mind's behind, it is a difficult journey, because nagging worries and worldly concerns obscure the moment.

In the shelter of quiet solitude, we draw near the Light. Once in the Light, always in the Light. God is with us for our protection and guidance. The closer we get to the essence of spirit, the more we realize how small our worries actually are.

We feel hope, because hope and love are sparks of Light emitted from our souls. When we long for the Light, the Light finds us -- dispels darkness -- and draws us closer to itself. Living in the Light, we are truly alive.

Seeing Makes the Difference
The Light shines love upon us and spreads bliss -- like sun rays dispersed through the prism of moisture. Seeing its beauty, we smile with the innocence of a newborn that is fascinated by the splendor of newly experienced living. Words cannot describe what experience must show. Seeing makes the difference.

Believing in the spirit is philosophy; experiencing it is knowing truth. This ever-present Light is the power that guides us through our lives and showers us with spiritual gifts. Such gifts are especially for the sensitive and the tranquil. Life's turbulence is lessons from the Light taking us toward the Light.

Savor Each Moment
Days and nights pass with a blur of speed that is incomprehensible. Where has time gone and why must it hurry us along? Time needn't control us. Life lived well is mastery over time

Our lives are expressions of the light burning from our spirits when we balance our emotions, calm our minds, and open our hearts. We may be a minor member of life's orchestra, but a member nonetheless.
